new man concepts

I don't usually don't do a lot of designing of men, but I've assigned myself a project with a strong male lead so now I'm just trying to figure him out.  I want him to be brainy, but not really dopey, eccentric, but now I'm thinking maybe not entirely buttoned down polished.

new annie

Okay, so I was inspired by the book Dream Worlds by Hans Bacher.  So I decided to experiment with media.  I have a great unpredictable roller ball that I love to use.   You can never really tell what the line quality is going to be so it really forces me to be more spontaneous.  ...now if I can only carry that over into color...

new project

So I've started the Painting Drama class over at Chrisoatley.com.  Great, great forum to share ideas, improve your process, etc.  This is a little drawing I've done for a character design for the class.  I think it captures just the right blend of emotions for the character that I was looking for.

Finished owl queen

Okay, I feel a lot better about the finished piece.  It gives a sense of space and time.  So a little environment goes a long way!  I also fixed the drapery of the blanket.  That was a relief!
Edited post: I revised it even further based on crits from the Oatley Academy class.  Thanks OA-ers!!

Okay here's another one.  I'm really trying to reinvent myself.  I already see a few tweaks I think I'll make, but I'm determined to walk away from it for a few days and not look at it.  It's a new discipline I'm working on...

Another character design.  I'm really trying to step outside my comfort zone and experiment with monsters.  I'm taking it slow though.  I'm starting with an animal and giving it a few monster elements.  So I'm taking baby steps, but important baby steps.

Princess in development...

This one is a wall sticker I worked up for a friend.  I'm going to try to make it customizable, but the best part is that when you get it in the mail, all you have to do is peel the backing off and slap it up onto the wall.  I really liked working in a more delicate style.  I do a lot of graphic stuff, and I love it, but I find I really need the variety to keep me inspired.  I think versatility of style is underrated.  It's great to have a signature style, but you miss out on a lot of great opportunities if you limit yourself to only one style.  The pendulum swings the other way too.  If you have too much of a mash of different styles, especially in a portfolio, it can be confusing what your strengths are.

The Queen!

These are a little outside what I normally do.  They were for a CHOW on conceptart.com, but I had a rush job come in and couldn't finish it up.  THis is kind of rough, but I thought I may as well post it anyway.  It show the progression.  The subject was designing the new intergalactic queen of burlesque.  Sci fi isn't my strong suit, but people were helpful with their suggestions on how to weird it up.

I'm not sure if I posted this before, but it's an OLDY! So I'm sure my NDA is up on this one ;) It was a special project for a dentist office that I created while still at Wacky World Studios. Enjoy!

Hey Everyone, just a few monsters for your viewing pleasure! I was confronted the other day over my outright neglect of this blog, so Zane, this is for you!
